Job Description / Duties

Your opportunity:
The Research Laboratory Technician will report to the Principal Investigator, Bebhinn Treanor, Professor of Immunology and Canada Research Chair in Spatially-resolved Biochemistry, and will provide research and administrative support in the research lab. The Treanor lab investigates the basic mechanisms that regulate the activation of B lymphocytes, with a particular focus on glycan-galectin interactions and ion channels, as well as development of new therapeutics and vaccine platforms. The incumbent will be the first point of contact for the lab, ensure its smooth operation including maintaining equipment and inventory, and ensure to follow established lab rules, processes and standards when carrying out assigned responsibilities. The incumbent will perform and demonstrate routine immunology, cell biology, and biochemistry lab techniques, provide detailed explanations and demonstrations on specialized lab equipment and practices, and assist with murine colony management.

Your responsibilities will include:
-Maintaining equipment and supply inventory
-Analyzing and interpreting experimental data
-Applying established standards when providing animal care
-Documenting and maintaining standard operating procedures
-Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols
-Troubleshooting routine equipment repairs
-Ordering supplies with approval
-Keeping well-informed on current technologies, best practices and industry standards

Qualifications / Required Skills

Essential Qualifications:
-Bachelor's Degree in Immunology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
-Minimum two years' experience working in a research laboratory environment relevant to immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry, including confocal and fluorescence microscopy; immunohistochemistry; ELISA; flow cytometry
-Demonstrated experience with in vivo techniques in murine models (injections, bleeding, etc.)
-Experience in murine colony management (e.g. breeding, genotyping)
-Experience in providing orientation and demonstrating laboratory procedures and/or equipment, and assisting students with research experiments
-Experience applying laboratory safety, biosafety, decontamination and protocol procedures
-Experience in the maintenance of a laboratory and laboratory equipment
-Experience in operating standard laboratory equipment
-Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills
-Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to research and assimilate new ideas and methods
-Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
-Familiarity with ethical guidelines, including issues associated with the use of animals

Assets (Nonessential):
-Experience with writing animal use protocols would be an asset
Experience with Matlab or R, Prism, and FlowJo would be an asset
-Experience with laboratory information management system (LIMS) would be an asset

NOTES: This is a two year, limited term appointment, with possibility of renewal.
