Job Description / Duties

The Department of Applied Oral Sciences is a multidisciplinary basic science department within the Faculty of Dentistry. Faculty interests include biomaterials and biomedical devices, tissue mechanics, cell/implant interactions, microbiology, and local therapeutic delivery. To complement the research conducted within the Faculty, applications are being sought from candidates with strong research expertise relating to pathogenesis and advanced materials associated with microbial biopolymers. Candidates specializing in the discovery of, and/or applied research relating to (i) synthesis pathways of microbial polymers as it relates to pathogenicity and persistence, and (ii) establishing the utility and unique materials properties of microbial biopolymers for applications in the broad field of materials science and biomedical engineering are especially encouraged to apply.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in one of the following areas: chemical, materials or biomedical engineering; material / polymer chemistry; biophysics; microbiology or a related discipline, and academic or industrial post-doctoral experience. This individual will be expected to compete effectively for extramural research funding and maintain an active research program that has the capacity to attract both NSERC and CIHR funding. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in the Faculty of Dentistry, and will actively engage in graduate student supervision in the Faculty of Dentistry or within a relevant academic unit (e.g., the Faculty of Medicine, including but not limited to the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and the School of Biomedical Engineering).
