Job Description / Duties

Endowed Research Chair in Immunology of Infectious Diseases
Department of Immunology, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba

The University of Manitoba invites applications for the Endowed Research Chair in Immunology of Infectious Diseases. The successful candidate will be eligible for a tenured or tenure-track position in the Department of Immunology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of May 1, 2020 or soon thereafter. It is expected that the candidate will establish an original, innovative, extramurally-funded research program addressing fundamental immunologic mechanisms in health and disease including, but not limited to, infectious, inflammatory, malignant or metabolic diseases and/or novel methods and technologies for immunotherapy.

The Department of Immunology, the first in Canada, was founded in 1969 and is well recognized for excellence in research and graduate training. Since 2009, the Department occupies modern open-concept lab space in the Apotex Centre that has facilitated research and high calibre graduate and post-graduate research training by promoting collaboration and sharing of expertise. The Immunology open lab is very well equipped and serves as home to several Faculty-wide core facilities including Flow Cytometry. The Department has received international recognition for fundamental immunology research, interdisciplinary research, translational immunology and collaboration with industry. Immunology faculty benefit from strong linkages with scientists in adjacent research hospitals and Institutes within the Manitoba Health Sciences Centre complex, including interactions with clinician-scientists, public health and epidemiology researchers, indigenous health and global public health experts. Abundant opportunities exist for research interactions with the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the Manitoba Centre for Proteomics and Systems Biology, CancerCare Manitoba and its affiliate Research Institute of Oncology and Hematology, Child Health Research Institute of Manitoba and multiple Government of Canada National Microbiology Laboratory sites – all located on or near the Health Sciences campus.

Applicants must have a PhD or MD/PhD degrees and post-doctoral experience in a biomedical discipline relevant to the position. Applicants must have a demonstrated ability to conduct and lead original, innovative research. Applicants should ideally have less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher since obtaining their most recent degree. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Endowed Chair also includes a generous laboratory start-up package. The successful applicant will have access to core Faculty resources including Central Animal Core Imaging, Transgenic Models facilities, lentiviral vector production, molecular imaging, histomorphology and ultrastructural imaging, flow cytometry, and proteomics.

The University of Manitoba is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from women, racialized persons/persons of colour, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of all sexual orientations and genders, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
