The
Canadian Society for Immunology has many different awards available for
it's members. Many of these awards provide the opportunity for it's CSI
student members to travel to the annual CSI conference or the
International Union of Immunological Societies conference. As is the
mandate of CSI is to foster and support immunology research and
education throughout Canada, the funds for these awards are generated
from 5% of the Societies' Investment account. List below you will find
the various awards supported by the Society.
CSI Summer Internship in Immunology (CSI-SII) award - NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
To
attract talented students to immunology research, the Canadian Society
for Immunology (CSI) will provide matching funds to enable
undergraduate or recently graduated students to carry out summer
research projects in immunology labs within Canada.

International
Congress of Immunology (ICI) – CSI Travel Award
These
awards are available every third year and open to CSI members who will
be attending the ICI annual meeting. CSI will award ten Student Awards,
five Postdoctoral Awards and three Junior Investigator Awards. These 18
awards are based on funds generated when the International Congress was
held in Canada (1986 and 2003).
In order to be eligible to apply you must meet the following criteria:
Student and Postdoctoral Travel Awards
($1,500/ea):
To be eligible
for an award the student or postdoctoral fellow must be a member of the
CSI. In addition, their supervisor (unless the supervisor's lab is not
in Canada) must hold a CSI membership for the two most recent
consecutive years. Student or postdoctoral fellows must complete a
Travel Award application and include the abstract that has been
submitted to the ICI meeting on which they are either first or senior
author and have their supervisor send a letter of support. A lab can
only receive one award.
Junior Investigator Travel Award ($2,500/ea):
To
be eligible for an award as a junior investigator, applicants must be
within 6 years from the date of their first faculty appointment and
must be a member of the CSI for the two most recent consecutive years.
To apply for the award applicants must complete a Travel Award
application, include the abstract that has been submitted to the ICI
meeting on which they are either first or senior author, include a
one-page research statement and a copy of their most significant
manuscript.

CSI Annual Meeting Awards
Bernhard Cinader Award | Investigator Travel Award | Trainee Awards | Investigator Award | New Investigator Award | John D. Reynolds Award
The
Bernhard Cinader Award:
This
award is named in honor of Dr. Hardy Cinader who was the inaugural
award recipient at the first CSI meeting held in 1987. Dr. Cinader was
a member of a small group of Immunologists that “founded” immunology in
Canada in the 60’s. Dr. Cinader was a outstanding immunochemist with a
strong personality and a passionate patron of native Canadian art and
artists. The Bernhard Cinader Award is awarded to an
Immunologist working in Canada who is an exceptional researcher and
also has something “extra”. The “extra” could be teaching, art,
outreach, writing, - nearly anything in which the researcher excels (is
not average). The nominee must hold a current full CSI membership in
order to be eligible. Nominations are accepted by letter and should
include the exceptional abilities of the scientist nominated. The award
includes travel reimbursement to the meeting as well as a plaque along
with a cash prize ($500). The award is given at the CSI meeting. See

NEW! Investigator Travel Award:
New
in 2012, CSI has added up to three New Investigator Travel awards up to
$1,500 each for a new Investigator to attend the next CSI Conference.
To be eligible for an award, new investigators must be a current CSI
member and be within 6 years of their first faculty appointment.
Submission requirements are a 3 page CV which includes a list of the
past 5 years publications, plus an abstract you or your trainees will
be presenting at the meeting. Results will be announced before the
early CSI meeting registration deadline. See the meeting web page for

Student/Postdoctoral CSI Travel Awards:
Ten to fifteen travel
awards (up to $1,000) will be available for trainees who are members of
the CSI. Award decisions are based on merit. To be eligible for an
award you must be a member of the CSI and your supervisor (unless the
lab is not in Canada) must hold a CSI membership for the two most
recent consecutive years. A lab can only receive one award. Results of
the travel award competition will be announced before the early CSI
meeting registration deadline. See past award recipients here.
CSI Investigator Award:
An award for a member of
the CSI for excellence in research over their career. The applicant can
be in any sector (academic, industry) at any stage of his/her career.
The award is up to $1,000 for one or two trainees of the CSI
Investigator Awardee to attend the next CSI Conference. Nominator must
send a letter of rationale/support summarizing the achievements and
three of the nominated's publications. Note: the Awardee must use this
award within two years of receipt. See past award recipients here.
CSI New Investigator Award:
An award for a member of
CSI for excellence or potential excellence in research. The applicant
must be within 6 years from the date of their first faculty
appointment, and can be in any sector (academic, industry). The award
is up to $1,000 for one or two trainees of the New Investigator Awardee
to attend the next CSI Conference. Nominator must send a letter of
rationale/support summarizing the achievements and two of the
nominated's publications. Note: the Awardee must use this award with

John D.
Reynolds Award:
This award
is named in honor of Dr. John D. Reynolds who was the inaugural award
recipient at the 21st annual CSI meeting in
2008. For over 20 years John Reynolds served the CSI in multiple
capacities including as Councilor and President. But what the CSI
honors him for most is his developing, building, and managing of CSI's
first WEB site. John's creative computer leadership led the CSI into
the 21st Century in Conference and Membership management long before
such usage was common. His volunteer service pushed the CSI to the
forefront Internationally.
This
John D. Reynolds award is given for a long term member of the CSI for
their exceptional service to CSI. The award can be, but is not
necessarily, given each year. The nominator should send a letter of
rationale/support summarizing the service to the CSI. The award
includes a $2,000 travel reimbursement to be used by the awardee and as
many trainees as they wish to include to the present CSI annual meeting
or within two years of award receipt.
